But only today — as Thanksgiving is this Thursday, we won’t be publishing an ASPPA Connect that day. We’ll be back on Monday, Dec. 1 with the next ASPPA Connect, which will feature useful and timely information.

But in the spirit of the season, here is some Thanksgiving information.

  • The first Thanksgiving held in Plymouth was a three-day event.
  • Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, in 1827 started a campaign to establish a Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Abraham Lincoln was the first president to officially declare Thanksgiving as a national holiday, in 1863.
  • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 90 this year — it was held for the first time in 1924.
  • The traditional cornucopia was a curved goat's horn filled to brim with fruits and grains.
  • 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
  • The Guinness Book of World Records states that the greatest dressed weight recorded for a turkey is 86 lbs.
  • A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.
  • California leads the country in turkey consumption.
  • 20% of cranberries eaten are consumed on Thanksgiving.
  • Lucy began pulling the football away from Charlie Brown in “A Charlie Brown Thanskgiving” on Nov. 20, 1973.
  • Yale and Princeton played football on Thanksgiving for the first time in 1876.
  • NFL football on Thanksgiving began in 1920.
  • The Detroit Lions played football on Thanksgiving for the first time in 1934.
