Smith Inaugurated as ACOPA’s 2015-2016 President

Karen Smith, MSPA, will serve as President of the ASPPA College of Pension Actuaries for the 2015-2016 year. Smith was inaugurated as president Oct. 19, at ACOPA’s annual luncheon at ASPPA’s Annual Conference in National Harbor, Md.

Smith succeeds ACOPA’s 2014-2015 President, Lynn M. Young, MSPA.

The President of Nova 401(k) Associates, Smith has been practicing in the retirement area for more than 22 years. In addition to her membership in the ACOPA, Smith is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an enrolled actuary and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center in 1998, where she was an Associate Editor for the University of Houston Law Review from 1995-1996.

The other ACOPA officers serving one-year terms beginning Oct. 19, 2015 are:

  • Executive Vice President: William G. Karbon, MSPA, CPC, QPA 
  • Vice President: Richard Kutikoff, MSPA, FSA, MAAA, EA, CFA 
  • Secretary: Sara DeFilippo, MSPA, EA, MAAA
  • Budget Officer: John R. Markley, FSPA, CPC, MAAA, ASA, FCA

FSPA Designations Bestowed

At the Oct 19 luncheon, ACOPA awarded its designation of Fellow, Society of Pension Actuaries (FSPA) to two outstanding actuaries:

  •  Thomas J. Finnegan, MSPA, CPC, QPA, MAAA, FCA, Managing Principal at The Savitz Organization and 2015 President of the American Retirement Association; and
  • Michael Bain, ASA, EA, MAAA, President of CMC Pension Professionals and recipient of ASPPA’s 2011 Educators Award.

ACOPA bestows the FSPA designation on actuaries who have demonstrated exceptional technical and thought leadership in the pension actuarial field over an extended period and at a very high level. The FSPA is ASPPA/ACOPA’s advanced Fellowship designation. It represents the highest achievement within ACOPA for an actuary and the actuary who achieves this designation has shown a level of knowledge and understanding of the private pension system significantly beyond what is tested on the Enrolled Actuary examinations.
