Hi there! I hope you all had a great summer. Being buried in 9/15 deadlines makes it all too easy to forget the time off and trips we took just a few weeks ago. Personally I had a lovely summer. My wife and I took a trip to the UK that included a 7-day self-guided walk in the Cotswolds in England and 4 days in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Festival. Walking is a wonderful way to experience places, and we intend to do many more walking trips in the future. And Edinburgh is an amazing city — I hope to spend a lot more time there in the future. However the highlight of my 2½ week trip was that I was off email the entire time — that alone was worth the cost of the trip. And even though I have been back for a month, I have yet to reinstall email on my IPhone. I’ve concluded it’s really not necessary to have access to email continually. I recommend you try it.
With the ASPPA conference coming up next month, we have a transition in leadership in ACOPA. This month’s update from ACOPA President Karen Smith is her final one. Next month, Kurt Piper will take over the reins as ACOPA President. Kurt and I are very old friends and we love annoying each other, so I’m really excited about being able to badger Kurt monthly for an LC update for the enews. Karen’s final update is here.

Takeovers! We love them and we hate them. We love them for the new business they represent, and we hate them because they are always a total pain in the butt to deal with. Richard Kutikoff has written a two-part series for us about the different sides of takeovers. Part 1, in this edition, discusses how to conduct yourself when you lose a client to another actuary. In the November Monthly, Part 2 will address issues when you are the new actuary. Part 1 is here.
As part of our Q&A series, I interviewed Ms. Bela Palli, the manager of the Standard Termination Compliance Division at PBGC. I appreciate Ms. Palli taking the time to respond to my questions (even though I don’t like her answers J). Her interview is here.
