From the Executive Editor

Oh man, I should have gone to dental school!  I think I’ve said this before. It’s the morning of Oct. 12 as I write this and like you, I’m dealing with last-minute 10/16 rushes, late clients, waiting on audit reports so the 5500s can be filed – you all know the drill. It’s on days like this that I question my career choice… but I’ll have forgotten this all by next week. I don’t know about you, but I’m taking the 10/16 week off and I’m not going to check email or do a damn thing work-related. And then the week after it’s off to the annual ASPPA conference in DC. I hope to see a lot of you there.

We have some amazing content this month. With all the natural disasters we have experienced here in the U.S. over the last few weeks, it’s been necessary for clients to get relief on their various deadlines. Jim Holland has written a comprehensive article on the history of disaster relief for DB plans, with a lot of detail about the current relief as a result of the most recent hurricanes. Jim’s article is here. (And thanks to Karen Smith for reviewing it.)

There was recent discussion on the listserv about a plan that used a very dated set of actuarial equivalence factors and the various issues this raises. I thought this would make an interesting article, so I asked the original poster, Andy Zimny, to write an article about it. Andy volunteered, and his article is here. (And thanks to Alex Kuhel for reviewing it.)

Last month were unable to publish a planned interview with Judy Miller, as she was without power because of the hurricane. But soon after that Judy was able to get her responses to me, and they are here. Judy is probably sitting on a beach chair in the sun and drinking gin and tonics right now, and more power to her for being retired and able to do that!

As you know, the IRS recently issued new mortality tables for 2018. I saw a link to a good article about this on BenefitsLink, and I received permission from its author, David Weaver, to publish it here.

I gave ACOPA President Kurt Piper a break from getting us an LC update for this edition, but if you are at the ASPPA conference next week and you see Kurt, back him into a corner and say: “Norm said you need to tell me what’s up with the LC, now spill them beans!” Kurt will appreciate that.

Okay everyone, it’s back to my deadline work now!

Cheers

Norm
