Hi folks, here we are again already! Thanksgiving is next week, and December is peeking around the corner.

Between the October e-news and this one, a lot of us attended the ASPPA Annual Conference in DC. There was a lot to talk about at the conference! New guidance on changes in valuation dates was a big topic, and of course there is a lot of anxiety and talk about how tax reform may affect our business. Stay tuned on that one!

A good place to start this month’s e-news is with our new ACOPA President, Bill Karbon. Bill may not have realized that being nagged by me for a monthly update of what our LC is doing was a part of his new role, but he knows it now. I really appreciate that people like Kurt Piper and Bill and all the other LC members are willing to devote their time to representing our profession. Bill’s first report to you is here.

All of you have no doubt been trying to absorb the new guidance on changes in funding methods. To help us with this, I asked Jim “Who I Always Ask for Content” Holland to write up a detailed article about this, and Jim graciously agreed as always. His article is here.

Karen Smith submitted an article that she and Larry Deutsch worked on about the accrual rules and some of its intricacies. Karen’s article is here.

Also in this issue you’ll find an announcement that the groundwork has been laid for the Plan Sponsor Council of America (PSCA) to join the American Retirement Association as of Jan 1, 2017, as the fifth ARA “sister” organization.

Back to Thanksgiving Day. I don’t know about you, but I love Thanksgiving. Like most immigrants to America, it was an easy holiday for me to adopt. No religious stuff associated with it, no guilt, we express gratitude, we spend time with family, we watch football (even though it’s with the wrong shaped ball), and we eat. What’s not to love for an immigrant on a day like that? I hope you all have a great time with your families on Thanksgiving!

The e-news will take a December break, so I’ll talk to you all again in ’18.

Cheers,

Norm
