The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) grants certain re-employment and benefits rights to an employee who leaves his/her job due to performing duty in uniformed military service. Employers maintaining qualified retirement plans and their advisers must understand the importance of ensuring compliance with the applicable requirements. This webcast will address important USERRA requirements, including eligibility for USERRA rights, employee notices, “make-up” contributions for returning veterans, special “compensation” and differential pay rules, and plan document provisions.

Learning Objectives:
1. Determine the eligibility requirements for receiving USERRA benefits
2. Compare the rules relating to USERRA employer and employee contribution requirements (“make-up contributions”) for returning veterans

About the Speaker

John P. Griffin, J.D. and LL.M. (Taxation), is a principal with the ASC Institute and has over 37 years of experience in the employee benefits field. Prior to joining ASCi, he was a principal with the pension consulting firm Global Benefit Advisors, LLC (GBA); a vice president with Pension Publications of Denver, Inc. (PPD); and a senior consultant with the benefit consulting practice of Coopers & Lybrand. Prior to entering private consulting, John worked in the Employee Plans Division of the IRS as a tax law specialist.
