GOP Budget Resolution Targets Fiduciary Rule

Even as the publication of the Department of Labor’s (DOL) fiduciary rule nears, the GOP is gearing up to undermine the funding for its implementation.

House Republican leaders are urging rank-and-file GOP lawmakers to back a budget resolution that provides $1.07 trillion in discretionary spending for fiscal 2017 and would balance the budget over 10 years, Politico reports, citing a memo distributed to Republicans.

GOP leaders are urging conservatives to rally around the budget with promises to undermine Obama administration policies by attaching policy riders to appropriations bills, specifically citing the DOL’s fiduciary rule, along with other targets.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan also ramped up his attacks on the fiduciary rule, calling it a “one-size-fits-all regulation that will restrict access and increase costs for Americans planning for retirement.”

In a blog post, Ryan noted, “We have already passed a bill in the House to delay this rule. And we have passed bills in two committees laying out responsible alternatives. When this rule comes down, we will be ready to do what we can to protect the savings of hardworking Americans. And when we do, I hope that we will be joined by the dozens of Democrats who have expressed concerns about these regulations.”

Ryan’s comments build on a theme that he has been making repeatedly in recent weeks, including a reference to the fiduciary proposal as something that the Obama administration “bullied through.”
