Senate HELP Committee Gives its Nod to PBGC Chief Nominee

Government Affairs

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on Nov. 29 voted in favor of Gordon Hartogensis to serve as Director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC).

The HELP Committee’s nod follows on the heels of that by the Senate Finance Committee, which on Nov. 15 approved Hartogensis in a 25-2 vote.

At the latter’s Sept. 27 hearing on Hartogensis’ nomination, he said that he considered serving as PBGC chief to be “an important mission” and that he thinks that the pension crisis “needs a bipartisan solution” and that he considers himself “a bipartisan problem solver” who can “be a facilitator in evaluating different solutions and bringing different parties together.”

HELP Committee Lamar Alexander (D-TN) said that Hartogensis “has extensive experience in financial planning, and his successful entrepreneurial experiences have equipped him to lead PBGC well.”

The full Senate must confirm Hartogensis before he can take office as PBGC Director.
