ASPPA Webcast: New Mortality Tables: Their Use and Application

The Society of Actuaries issued updated mortality tables and mortality improvement scales in October 2014. The mortality tables are not only updated but also introduce the concept of generational mortality. The speakers will share experiences with implementing the new mortality tables with year-end 2014 Disclosure Reports for accounting purposes. They will also present up-to-date information regarding the timing and implementation of the new mortality approach by the IRS for funding and lump sum calculation purposes.

  • Recognize the appropriate use of tables and impact of adopting the tables
  • Identify best practices to minimize errors and corrections when errors occur

    Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent (ERPA)

    The webcast is designed to offer registrants 1 ERPA CE credit. The final decision as to the number of ERPA credits rests solely with the Internal Revenue Service.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

    Raymond D. Berry, MSPA, ASA, MAAA, EA 

    Ray Berry is a Manager in the Grant Thornton Chicago tax practice and the Compensation and Benefits consulting services practice. His focus has been on actuarial consulting, financial reporting and accounting for employee benefit plans. Ray has spoken on retirement and welfare plan issues at actuarial, employee benefit, and accounting conferences.

    Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Ray served as a consultant for JPMorgan and CCA Strategies.  Ray also serves on the EA-2F Examination Committee.  This committee writes one of the Enrolled Actuaries examinations administered by the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries.

    John R. Markley, FSPA, ASA, MAAA, EA, Markley Actuarial Services, Inc.

    John Markley founded Markley Actuarial Services in 1985 and has over 30 years of experience providing services to qualified retirement plans. John brought 5 years of experience from working at Coopers & Lybrand, where he was responsible for services provided to Fortune 500-size clients and he participated in the design and implementation of early 401(k) plans. John's primary responsibilities include sharing services with potential clients and providing an historical legislative perspective.

    In addition to being CEO of the firm, John serves on the Leadership and Management team and provides consultations regarding defined benefits plans, including large plans, municipal plans, and plans with employee contributions.
